Home Energy Masterplan
A home energy masterplan is an assessment carried out before starting a retrofit project. It evaluates and assesses the measures most suitable for a house since each will present unique issues to be addressed. The masterplan is intended to avoid a situation whereby residents invest in retrofit measures that subsequently do not perform as anticipated.
Practitioners who produce a home energy masterplan begin by visiting the property to carry out an assessment, usually in the form of a detailed measured site survey. They must establish how the residents plan to use the property and what they would like to achieve, e.g. greener home, lower fuel bills, reduce draughts, etc.
Software is then used to create a bespoke report that illustrates the current performance of the house in terms of energy use and CO2, and the expected performance if certain options are picked. From this, the probable benefits and costs of each option are examined according to the residents’ particular needs.
The masterplan can also integrate the retrofit with wider plans that the residents may have – such as refurbishment, remodelling or an extension. Specific types of measures can be focused on, such as solid wall insulation, natural building products, fuel switching, in addition to measures that may be suited to the particular building types such as historic buildings.
